The World Press Photo awards gallery is a cavalcade of human suffering and cruelty: A man overlooking a wasteland in the ruins of Gaza. Someone being stoned to death in Somalia, before and after shots of the soon-unrecognizable man and the crowd. People gunned down in the streets in Madagascar, a look of fear frozen on corpses. A Jewish settler throwing wine at a passing Palestinian woman for no good reason except he can. A VA hospital in the US, amputees and their loved ones; a man with half his head missing being lifted out of a hospital bed. Even the sports section has teenagers streetfighting in the Ukraine. They're deeply moving and important to see, almost every last one of them.
